February Meeting Featuring Jerry Hadden, Delaware River Guide

Our February 24th meeting will feature noted Delaware River Guide Jerry Hadden.  Jerry will be presenting "Insights of a Professional River Guide".

"Delaware River fly fishing guide Jerry Hadden. Fly fishing since 1970, 40 years of fly fishing experience, licensed guide since 1994.

Growing up in the surrounding area I never thought of fishing as a hobby, or sport. It was just something you did, more like a way of life. Spending summers at the family cottage on an area lake there wasn't much else to do except fish. Chucking hardware with my Zebco 202 most of the day produced a largemouth or two if I was lucky. This quickly became tiresome especially after watching the old timer from the cottage down on the corner go out in the evening and catch half a dozen bass in a couple of hours with his fly rod. Then there was uncle Bud. When I first saw him catch a large brown on a local stream with his bamboo rod so many years ago. I knew fly fishing was what I was meant to do."

Meeting time is 7pm, at the DAR House on 8th Ave in Bethlehem. (just past Nitschmann Middle School).  Free and open to the public.

January Meeting CANCELED

Due to the threat of bad weather coupled with some other unforeseen circumstances, we will be canceling tomorrows (Jan. 27th) monthly meeting.  We will make an effort to re-schedule the  program: 'Hendrickson Hatch on the Delaware' by chapter member Jose Dejesus.

Highlights from the Angling Collections

of Lafayette College’s Skillman Library

In honor of the upcoming 2014 trout season, Skillman Library is pleased to offer up a catch of fine biblio-fish to all members of the Lehigh Valley Chapters of

Trout Unlimited .

These tasteful delights come from Skillman’s three named angling collections—

the Conahay, Fox, and Tinsman Collections—as well as from recently acquired holdings. Please join us for a chance to see these exciting selections from our angling collections.

Highlights will include the magnificent etchings of D.R. Wakefield from his 1987 production, Some Trout , as well as examples of the most famous angling book of all time—Izaak Walton’s The Compleat Angler (first published in 1653), which is held by Skillman Library in more than 100 editions. Selections from the 500-volume Robert Tinsman Angling Collection will include classics of British and American angling and examples of some of the collection’s fine piscatorial bookbindings.

The Robert S. Conahay Jr. Collection (300 volumes) will be represented by notable works on Atlantic salmon, as well as examples of hand-tied salmon flies from Conahay’s collection of more than 700 flies tied in 470 different Atlantic salmon patterns. Titles from the collection of Lafayette alumnus and noted angler known as the “Dean of the Letort,” Charles K. Fox, Class of 1931, (200 volumes) will include his own works as well as others documenting the development of trout fly-fishing between 1930 and 1970. Other works will feature women anglers, angling literature, and fish-themed artists’ books.

LV Chapters to work together

There are 4 Trout Unlimited Chapters in the Lehigh Valley, and up until now, we have done very little to work together.  Hopefully that is changing.  A "task force" of members from each Chapter have been meeting to discuss ways we can work together more effectively and more often.  The benefit to our members will be a greater chance to get involved, and for our chapters it will provide a larger audience for events and projects. We all hope you are able to take advantage of these opportunities.  In light of that, we have put together a "master" calendar of events through March 2014 of all the events for the 4 Chapters.  As you will see it is quite full.  Please take note of the times and locations, as they will vary based on which Chapter is hosting the event.

Holiday Family Craft event

This event is part of an effort to coordinate the many environmental groups of the Valley. The idea is to have an event monthly, and allow groups to market themselves and network with other groups and the public. This is the first event.

Hokendaqua TU Meeting 12/21/11

The Hokendaqua TU Chapter will have Phil Hublitz presenting  the years review of Project Healing Waters events conducted by our chapter.  The presentation will on 12/21/11 at the Catasauqua High Schoo, room C219.  The time is 6:30pm.

Novemeber 22nd meeting and program

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, this months program focused on the use of turkey feathers in fly patterns.  Several members brought some tying supplies and a pattern to share, and all three took turns demonstrating the tying steps to make those patterns.

January 25 meeting and presentation.

This month's meeting featured a program from the members of the Hokendauqua Chapter of TU. A discussion and presentation of images and stories from a trip west to Montana, detailing some of the trials, planning, and successes.
